Job Description

Who we are & what we stand for

Do you want to help make Gateshead a place where everyone thrives? If that sounds like you, keep reading - we might be the perfect match.

We’re delighted that you’re interested in working with us. You’d be joining us at a very exciting time.

We pride ourselves on our ambitious and forward-thinking approach to taking care of Gateshead and its people, and we passionately believe that our employees reflect that spirit in truly enabling Gateshead to thrive.

At Gateshead Council you’d be a highly valued member of a team that recognises and respects the skills that you bring to your role, encourages creativity and passionately advocates a great work / life balance. Our actions speak louder than words, and with flexi-time and hybrid working available across many of our roles, as well as a full suite of outstanding employee benefits, we’re confident that it isn’t just the salary that attracts our staff.

Where property insight meets real community impact.

You’ll be joining a dynamic Property Services team within Economy, Innovation and Growth, playing a vital role in supporting the Council’s strategic goals and objectives.

This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in shaping how the Council's land and property assets support service delivery, community priorities and the borough's wider strategic objectives. Working across a diverse property portfolio, you will help ensure our assets deliver the greatest possible value for residents, communities and the Council.

The role offers a unique combination of strategic asset management, project delivery, stakeholder engagement and community development. From leading property reviews and supporting service transformation projects, to coordinating Community Asset Transfers that create lasting social value, you'll contribute to decisions that make a visible difference across Gateshead.

Shaping Gateshead's future through property, place and people.

What you will get to do

  • Support delivery of the Council’s Corporate Asset Strategy and associated action plans, ensuring property decisions align with service needs, community priorities and wider corporate objectives.

  • Coordinate and support the delivery of strategic property projects, bringing together multiple stakeholders to drive delivery and achieve positive outcomes.

  • Assist in developing and implementing a rolling property review programme to routinely assess whether assets remain fit for purpose, cost-effective, and aligned with current and future service needs.

  • Identify opportunities to improve utilisation of the Council’s property portfolio, including developing options appraisals to support evidence-based decision making.

  • Coordinate the Council's Community Asset Transfer programme, supporting community organisations through the transfer process and ensuring consistency with Council policy.

  • Support the development, implementation and review of property policies, processes, guidance and procedures that support the Council's strategic priorities and objectives, helping to ensure a consistent, effective and corporate approach to asset management.

  • Act as a key point of contact for internal and external enquiries regarding the use of Council assets, including engagement with Voluntary and Community Sector organisations and other public sector partners.

  • Work collaboratively with Council services to understand operational need, signpost property related issues and support informed decision making.

  • Represent the service at internal and external meetings, developing strong working relationships with partners, stakeholders and community organisations, presenting reports where necessary.

  • Carry out any other duties appropriate to the grade of the post.

Influence, deliver, and leave a lasting impact on the borough.

What you will bring

  • Public sector/Property experience
Experience of working within a property, asset management, regeneration, project management or similar environment, ideally in the public sector.

  • Strategic asset management knowledge
Knowledge and understanding of strategic asset management principles and how property assets can support service delivery, community outcomes and organisational objectives.

  • Project coordination and delivery
Experience of delivering or coordinating projects involving multiple stakeholders or service areas.

  • Analysis and evidence-based decision making
Experience of analysing information and data to produce clear, evidence-based recommendations to inform decision-making.

  • Policy and process development
Experience of developing, interpreting or implementing policies, processes, guidance or procedures to support consistent and effective service delivery.

  • Stakeholder engagement and partnership working
Strong stakeholder engagement, communication and organisational skills.

  • Organisation, communication and delivery in a fast-paced environment
Strong organisational, communication and influencing skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities, meet deadlines and work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
