Our School Crossing Patrol Service forms part of Gateshead Council's Sustainable Transport and Road Safety Team. We play a vital role in helping children and families travel safely to and from school while encouraging walking, wheeling and other forms of active travel. Working closely with schools, local communities and road users, our patrols provide a visible and valued presence that helps create safer journeys every day. No matter the weather, our team is committed to making a positive difference where it matters most.

A vacancy exists for a permanent part-time School Crossing Patrol based at Coatsworth Road / Oxford Terrace, Gateshead.

Working Hours

Monday to Friday:

  • 8:45am to 9:15am
  • 3:10pm to 4:35pm

Term time only

  • 1 hour 55 minutes per day
  • 9 hours 35 minutes per week

You will receive full training, a uniform and ongoing support. The role is paid on a pro-rata basis with salary payments spread across the year, including school holiday periods.

No formal qualifications are required. We're looking for someone who enjoys working with people, can build a positive rapport with children and adults, and has an awareness of road safety. We'll provide all the training you need to confidently and safely manage the crossing point.

What you will get to do

  • Help children, families and other pedestrians cross the road safely before and after school.
  • Safely stop and manage traffic using the approved School Crossing Patrol equipment and procedures.
  • Follow all School Crossing Patrol Service policies, health and safety procedures, and accident/incident reporting requirements.
  • Maintain control of pedestrians waiting to cross and provide clear instructions to ensure their safety.
  • Work closely with schools, communities and road users to promote safer journeys and active travel.
  • Report any concerns, issues or incidents to the Road Safety Team.
  • Follow relevant Highway Code requirements, codes of practice and operational procedures.
  • Attend training, meetings and health assessments when required.
  • Work independently outdoors in all weather conditions and maintain a reliable presence at your designated crossing point.

What you will bring:

  • A good understanding of road safety, road use and traffic awareness.
  • Excellent reliability, punctuality and dependability, recognising the important responsibility of the role.
  • The ability to communicate confidently and positively with children, parents, carers, school staff, drivers and members of the public.
  • The physical ability to stand throughout duty periods, move safely on and off the road, hold patrol equipment and work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • The awareness and alertness to identify potential hazards, judge changing traffic situations and respond quickly when needed.
  • A professional approach, smart appearance, community-minded attitude and ability to work independently.
  • A willingness to undertake training, attend health checks where appropriate and travel to your designated patrol site
