Are you looking for a role where you can make a real impact on the day-to-day movement of people and traffic across Gateshead? We are seeking a proactive and organised Street Works Permit Support Officer to join our team and play a key role in managing and coordinating works on the borough's highway network.
Working closely with utility companies, contractors, neighbouring authorities and internal teams, you'll help ensure that street works are planned and coordinated effectively, minimising disruption to residents, businesses and road users. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with experience in highways or street works who enjoys problem-solving, stakeholder engagement and working in a fast-paced environment where no two days are the same.
What you'll get to do:
- Coordinate and manage activities on the highway network in line with street works and traffic management legislation.
- Assess and determine permit applications, variations and requests from utility companies and other works promoters.
- Help minimise disruption to residents, businesses and road users by reviewing the impact of planned works and identifying effective solutions.
- Manage the administration of permit fees, inspection charges and other street works-related income, ensuring accurate records and invoicing.
- Investigate and respond to street works enquiries and complaints, providing professional advice and support.
- Maintain accurate street works records and liaise with neighbouring authorities, emergency services and other key stakeholders.
- Work collaboratively with inspectors and partners to ensure compliance with permit conditions and street works legislation.
- Issue Fixed Penalty Notices where appropriate and support enforcement activities.
- Analyse information, monitor performance and contribute to continuous service improvements.
- Support the effective operation of the Street Works team through strong organisation, communication and customer service.
What you'll bring:
- Have experience working within a highways, street works or traffic management environment.
- Understand, or can quickly develop knowledge of, the New Roads and Street Works Act (NRSWA) and Traffic Management Act requirements.
- Are confident using specialist systems, databases and Microsoft Office applications to manage information accurately.
- Have excellent organisational skills and can effectively prioritise competing demands and deadlines.
- Can analyse complex information, make informed decisions and solve problems confidently.
- Build positive working relationships with colleagues, contractors, utility companies and other stakeholders.
- Possess strong communication, numeracy and administrative skills, with a focus on delivering high-quality customer service.
