The Highways & Waste team are responsible for ensuring that Gateshead is a safe and attractive place in which people can live, work and spend free time. From waste strategy, including collection and recycling to the maintenance of our highways and street lighting. You’ve probably also noticed significant investment in the restoration of the Tyne Bridge, and our Highways team continue to play a pivotal role in that restoration project of a local landmark.
Three Apprentice Roadworker vacancies have arisen within the in-house Highway Team who deliver the day to day maintenance of the highways and footway networks within Gateshead. The Highways Team have a strong ‘can do’ attitude which is focused on delivering high standards of work to all highway users.
We seek reliable, hardworking and enthusiastic individuals to join our successful team delivering a range of projects from small scale patching, drainage and footway repairs together with general highway construction and maintenance works.
What you'll get to do
- Work within a team of Highway Operatives to carry out maintenance and new construction duties.
- Use and maintain necessary tools and equipment in accordance with applicable codes of practice.
- Assist in numerous basic tasks in relation to highway operational duties e.g. laying paving, kerbstones, installing concrete, tarmac, and drainage.
- Comply with relevant health & safety legislation.
- Develop skills in setting out, reading, and understanding site plans.
- Assist with maintain a clean and tidy work environment, following Supervisor/Mentor instructions at all times.
- Attend periodic learner reviews.
- Attend all training relevant to the post.
- Assist in maintaining a health, safe and secure environment and to act in accordance with the Council policies and procedures.
- Develop knowledge of relevant handheld software.
